Seven Annoying People You Will Meet On Trains (And Other Public Transportation)

Let me start by saying I don’t hate trains. Travelling by train is slow, but for shorter distances, I much prefer it to flying. I do, however, take an issue with the people on trains. So, without further ado, my list of pet peeves and people who incorporate them. Beware of clichés and stereotyping.

Why I didn’t dance Salsa in Cali

Cali was on my (very vague) itinerary from the very beginning. It claims to be the capital of salsa and Lonely Planet describes it as a pulsing city that offers everything other cities only promise, so naturally I had to go. It is situated in the Valle del Cauca and one of Colombia’s agricultural centers. More interestingly, it was home to one of the big drug cartels not so long ago, which is possibly why inhabitants take extra security measures, like manned gates in some of the nicer neighbourhoods.

You stole my money! No, wait…

Colombia? Are you crazy?

That or something along those lines was often the reaction when I told someone about my upcoming solo four-week trip to Colombia. When I say “often”, I mean when I told my grandpa, but there was definitely some consternation accompanied by a whole lot of warnings. I got messages from people, who usually don’t keep in touch much warning me to be careful and not to trust anyone. What worried everyone most, was that I was going to go alone.

Take a good look at them. Don’t they look delicious?

Okay, I lied. I don’t have cookies, and if I did I would be eating them myself. I’m just trying to lure you in, so you won’t think this is just another one of the millions of half-assed travel blogs out there.

Which it totally is, full disclosure.

I’d say the half-assed part won’t be true for this, but as I am a student on a limited budget, I won’t be able to travel full time. However, I do spend all of my extra money on traveling and even as I’m writing this, I’m touring Colombia. I have traveled as often as possible, but so far mostly in Europe and this is my first longer, self-organized trip. I figured I might as well share the experience online, and I hope to help others the same way other travel blogs have helped me.
